1987年至1996年，历任《北方之星报》（Northern Star Newspaper）记者、自由记者、新闻集团（News Ltd）记者等职。1996年至2003年，任澳大利亚外交和外贸部（Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade）外事官员。2003年至2007年，任澳大利亚国家评估办公室（Office of National Assessments）高级战略分析师。2007年至今，任洛伊国际政策研究所（The Lowy Institute for International Policy）国际安全项目主管。
此外，自2013年起他还担任布鲁金斯学会（The Brookings Institution）外交政策高级客座研究员，新南威尔士大学（University of New South Wales）澳大利亚-印度研究中心主管助理。他也是《澳大利亚国际事务期刊》（Australian Journal of International Affairs）编委 ，世界经济论坛核安全全球议程委员会（World Economic Forums Global Agenda Council on Nuclear Security）委员，澳大利亚皇家海军海权研究中心（Seapower Centre of the Royal Australian Navy）客座研究员。
